C-Shaped Marble Sculpture: Texture Modeling and Fabrication

This C-shaped landscape sculpture shows how MarbleFan translated natural bark references into a producible marble surface—from image sampling and digital texture modeling to segmented carving, hand refinement and factory trial assembly.

Project Overview

The sculpture is approximately 1.9 m high and 1.8 m wide. Its non-closed C-shaped ring combines a stainless-steel inner ring with an outer ring carved from Black & White Root Marble from Guangxi, China. Two measured openings interrupt the circle, giving the large form a more contemporary, abstract tension.

Sampling the Bark Reference

The relief of the outer marble ring began with photographs of real tree bark. Suitable references were selected first, then their surface features were sampled as the basis for digital analysis and texture development.

Building a Digital Texture Model

The sampled data was analysed and adjusted in software to generate a usable relief model. This made it possible to test how the irregular bark-inspired texture would translate into controlled stone geometry before fabrication began.

Previewing the Complete Sculpture

The generated texture was then applied to the complete sculpture model. Several views of the same model were used to review the C-shaped opening, the relationship between the inner and outer rings, and the overall rhythm of the relief.

Segmented Carving and Hand Refinement

In production, the Black & White Root Marble was divided into components, cut and roughly carved. The separated pieces were then assembled by hand so the bark-like outer surface could be refined through further hand carving.

Factory Trial Assembly

After the components were completed, the sculpture was trial assembled in the factory. This full-scale check brought the non-closed ring, the two end openings and the inner-to-outer relationship back together before delivery.

An Art Centre Entrance Courtyard

The sculpture can act as a visual anchor in a cultural or arts setting. In this spatial study, a generous entrance courtyard provides the viewing distance required by the 1.9-metre form, while restrained concrete architecture and landscape planting allow the dark marble and warmer inner ring to remain legible.

From Natural Reference to Fabricable Stonework

This project demonstrates MarbleFan's ability to turn an organic surface reference into a controlled digital model, separate it into producible marble components, refine the relief by hand and verify the complete form through factory trial assembly.
